Truck driving brings a lot of gains to all those willing to take it up as a career. If you love the wide-open roads and cool breeze blowing across you and music on the radio playing your favorites with a sense of freedom, then for these and more benefits, truck driving would be the choice of career for you! Imagine, no boss bothering you for targets and goals. No fellow workers to deal and squabble with, and no more close doors in your little cabin on the 15th floor. At the beginning, I spoke about a lot of gains, so lets consider them one by one.

Better condition than before:

Truck driving has changed for the better than what it was in earlier times. Companies understand that an attraction for good drivers is comfortable driving seats, well-ventilated cabins and other facilities to make his/her job a pleasure. So, it is now physically less challenging. Many companies operate brand new trucks. Today, some have fitted TV’s, Fridges and V.C.R.’s. Some have special suspension setup that give you a smooth ride. Computer helps much in communication, thus making less the paperwork and promoting efficient work. Truckers now are even e-mail savvy and use the Internet from their cabins!

Keep fit enough:

But the internal conditions however good, driving for long hours at a time and cargo delivery, and loading/unloading can demand good fitness to prevent fatigue. The Transportation Department of the country regulates working hours and other factors of the truck drivers. Local drivers make a trip and get back home the same evening. On the other hand, longer distance drivers especially those, who own their own trucks are away from home for even up to a year.
The long distance drivers can be on duty for nearly fourteen hours and that includes driving and delivery or other duties. But, he should have a rest period of at least ten hours before this. All drivers are required to note down in their log- books the time they work. Drivers are paid according to the number of hours or number of miles they cover. So, the drivers prefer to drive the maximum hours, in order to earn more. As a long distance driver, you must be ready to undergo boring period of breaks, feeling of loneliness and tiredness. You also have to drive in the nights.

Internal satisfaction:

You will feel satisfied that you are a part of an industry that contributes to the nation’s economy by undertaking this taxing, but fulfilling job. Anything that a family gets in their hands on time has been usually been brought by some truck drivers’ commitment. The railways can transport longer distances, but only trucks are responsible for delivery straight to the customers.

A good pay package:

The trucking industry records say that new and trained drivers usually draw a salary of dollars around 40,000 per year and this can go up even during their first year. Then they say, on an average, an experienced driver can earn upto and over 50,000 dollars per year with benefits.

The perks:

Top companies usually offer complete insurance covering health, vision, dental, life, and disability. Then, there is paid holidays, sick leave, and profit-share, options to own stocks and good retirement plans.

The need:

To cater to the freight requirements of the economy, there is practically unlimited need of companies for good drivers. A company just cannot afford to be short of drivers. Such is the freight demand.

As old drivers bow out of the stage and retire and the industry grows, the demand and value of drivers will soar. So join up!
